Running at Altitude: Patrick Buzzard's Journey Through the Leadville 100

Patrick Buzzard, 4th Test and Evaluation Squadron security manager, left, and his daughter, Hailey Buzzard, right, cross the finish line of the Leadville Trail 100 Run near Leadville, Colorado, Aug. 20, 2023. Hailey paced her father for the final 12.4 miles of the race. The Leadville Trail 100 Run is an ultramarathon held annually on rugged trails and dirt roads through the heart of the Rocky Mountains. The course is a 50-mile out-and-back dogleg run primarily on the Colorado Trail, starting at 10,200 feet. The centerpiece of the course is the climb up to Hope Pass at 12,620 feet, encountered on both the outbound trek and on the return. Buzzard finished the 100-mile course in 29 hours, 48 minutes, and 57 seconds, just beating the 30-hour time limit. (Courtesy photo)
