New commander takes reins of 505th Training Group

Col. Mark K. Waite took command of the 505th Training Group during a change of command ceremony at Hurlburt Field, Fla., June 25.

Colonel Waite served as the Combat Operations Division Chief, 609th Air and Space Operations Center, Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, prior to assuming command from Col. Christopher P. DiNenna. 505th Command and Control Wing Commander Col. Edward L. McKinzie presided over the command change and Colonel Waite's daughter Megan sang the National Anthem during the ceremony.

Colonel DiNenna heads to the Pentagon, where he will serve in the Air Force Special Programs Office.

Colonel Waite entered the Air Force January 1987 through Officer Training School. He is a Master Air Battle Manager with more than 3200 flying hours in the E-3 Sentry aircraft, including 156 combat and combat support flying hours. He has served in a variety of airborne command and control (C2) units at tactical and operational levels.

The new group commander led crews in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Allied Force, Joint Guardian, Desert Fox and Desert Thunder. He has worked at Air Combat Command headquarters as the E-3 Functional Area Manager. In this role he was responsible for all Combat Air Force's Airborne Warning and Control System operations and employment procedures, test support and standards development.

He has had several assignments with the 505th Command and Control Wing, including: 605th Test and Evaluation Squadron operations officer, 505th Training Squadron commander and 505th Training Group deputy commander.

The colonel has a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics and Master of Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Master of Military Arts and Operational Science from Air University. He is a graduate of Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College and Air War College.

Colonel Waite is married to the former Tammy Ann Bendele of San Antonio and has three children; Brandon, Justin and Megan.
