The 20th Civil Engineer Squadron’s Fire and Emergency Services, along with Sumter Safe Kids Coalition and South Carolina Department of Public Health, wrapped up their week-long Child Passenger Safety Technician class with a car seat check event held at the Shaw Base Exchange parking lot on Jan. 31.

Through their efforts, more than 20 children are now safer on the roadways where, according to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nation-wide more than 156,000 children are injured in traffic accidents yearly.

During the week-long CPST class, 16 personnel from the 20th CES FES, Lexington Fire, Dorchester County Fire, Lexington and Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, and Prisma Health were added to the ranks of the 1,100 current CPST technicians in the state of South Carolina. Through this class, they gained the skills and education to provide parents and grandparents with information to keep their children safe.

The 20th CES FES now has 10 certified technicians on staff and is a registered car seat inspection station with the state of South Carolina. To schedule a seat check with them, please feel free to email TSgt Anthony Whitney at anthony.whitney@us.af.mil or call 803-895-1108 to set up an appointment.
