AFNWC commander promoted to second star Published July 14, 2022 By Aimee Malone Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center commander was promoted to major general June 24. Maj. Gen. John P. Newberry is responsible for the lifecycle management of nuclear weapons systems supporting two legs of the nation’s nuclear triad, including intercontinental ballistic missiles, air-launched cruise missiles, gravity bombs, and nuclear command, control and communications systems. The center is headquartered at Kirtland Air Force Base and synchronizes all of Air Force Materiel Command’s nuclear materiel management support of Air Force Global Strike Command. He is also dual hatted as the Air Force program executive officer for strategic systems. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Newberry has served in a variety of acquisition fields including space test; flight test; systems engineering; program manager of several aircraft acquisition programs, to include foreign military sales programs; deputy PEO for Air Force mobility; and KC-46 system program manager. He was also the Air Force PEO for tankers, responsible for the planning and execution of all life cycle activities for the Air Force’s tanker fleet, as well as the program element monitor for air refueling tankers, and Joint Staff J8, where he oversaw strategic and tactical major defense acquisition programs. In addition, Newberry commanded the 546th Aircraft Sustainment Squadron, Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center, Oklahoma, which provided logistics support to aircraft across eight different fleets. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 as a procurement officer, equipping the Afghan National Army. Prior to his current position, he was the Air Force PEO for bombers and director of the Bombers Directorate at the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, where he was responsible for the sustainment and modernization of the bombers. Newberry is from Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he attended Doherty High School before attending the Air Force Academy.
