YOUNGSTOWN AIR RESERVE STATION, Ohio -- Col. Giuseppe Deabate assumed command of the 910th Medical Squadron during a ceremony, March 5, 2022, in Youngstown Air Reserve Station’s Kubli Morale and Wellness Center.
The ceremony was officiated by Col. Jeff Van Dootingh, commander of the 910th Airlift Wing, who transferred the 910th MDS guidon, a flag representing the unit, to Deabate, symbolizing his assumption of command.
“I will promote and safeguard this unit’s morale, your physical wellbeing and general welfare,” said Deabate while addressing the 910th MDS. “Remember, I will fight for you because I have been where you are and I believe in you. You can count on me to execute the mission alongside of you in a climate and culture of mutual respect and inclusion where everyone is treated with dignity.”
The assumption of command is a military tradition deeply rooted in history, dating back to the time of Roman legions. Militaries developed flags unique to the organization with specialized colors and emblems. When soldiers followed their leader into battle, they kept sight of the flag. If the banner still waved after the conflict, it was a sign that their side did not taste defeat on the field of battle.
The tradition of passing the guidon continues today in a ceremonial capacity, serving to represent the transition of power to the next squadron commander and symbolizing their acceptance of leadership.
The 910th MDS provides manpower augmentation for medical support of Expeditionary Air Force activities for Air Force theater hospitals and medical treatment facilities. Medical support includes triage, treatment and stabilization of patients for transport and return to duty. In peacetime, the 910th MDS provides wing support for physical examinations, immunizations, pre and post-deployment medical screenings and medical intelligence data.
“He’s made a career of taking care of other Americans in the medical field as a nurse and a chief nurse…” said Van Dootingh. “I have all the confidence in the world in making this selection, I look forward to working with him to serve you and taking the medical squadron to the next level.”
