Col. Michael Goodman is the Commander, 505th Command and Control Wing, Detachment 1 at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. The mission of Det. 1 is to provide airpower expertise and exercise support to Mission Command Training Program (MCTP). The wing detachment provides airpower academics during Mission Command Training and doctrinally-correct, theater-specific airpower integration and replication in MCTP exercises. Det. 1 provides observer, coach/trainer support and U.S. Air Force exercise control to prepare warfighters for future operations through U.S. Army Mission Rehearsal Exercises and Warfighter exercises. As commander, Col. Goodman is the principal airpower advisor to the U.S. Army’s Training and Doctrine Command, Combined Arms Center. He leads a team responsible for advising the command on present and future weapon systems, ordnance, tactics, procedures, capabilities and limitations as they affect Army force structure, concepts, doctrine, training, modeling, simulation, acquisition and analysis programs.
Col. Goodman entered the U.S. Air Force in 1997 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Saint Joseph’s University, Philadelphia, Pa. After receiving his commission, Col. Goodman served as a navigator in the AC-130H Spectre Gunship and the EC-130H Compass Call. He has flown more than 130 combat missions in both Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. In 2008, the colonel was selected for the Financial Management Leadership Program at Headquarters Air Education and Training Command where he served as the Chief of Budget Operations and Integration and later served as the Comptroller for Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas. Returning to flight operations in 2011, he served as an Assistant Director of Operations for the 41st Electronic Combat Squadron and later deployed to Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, to command the 41st Expeditionary Electronic Combat Squadron during the 2013 spring fighting season. In 2014, Col. Goodman was selected to command the 429th Expeditionary Operations Squadron, Forward Operating Locations Curacao and Aruba. Prior to his current assignment, the colonel was the Deputy Division Chief in Combat Operations and Combat Plans and the Division Chief for Strategy at the 608th Air Operations Center, Headquarters 8th Air Force, Barksdale AFB, La.
